DE: Zunächst: „Both Sides of the Moon“ ist mein erstes Doppelalbum mit über 120 Minuten, 100% neuer Musik. Also keine Remixes und keine Livemitschnitte.

„Both Sides of the Moon“ ist zum einen eine Hommage an den 50ten Jahrestag der Apollo 11 Mondlandung am 21. Juli 1969.

Mal düster, mal melancholisch, mal verspielt, mal ernst. Auch Kitsch ist erlaubt. Aber bitte mit Stil.

Auf „Both Sides of the Moon“ hatte ich absolut freie Hand.

Both Sides of the Moon“ fertig produzieren.

„Both Sides of the Moon“ ist ein sehr abwechslungsreiches Album geworden.

Ein paar Timingschwankungen seihen mir also bitte verziehen.

Bernd „moonbooter“ Scholl

DE:

Mit „Groundcontrol and the Victory of Mankind“ veröffentlicht moonbooter das erste Album einer neuen Serie. Gute Unterhaltung!

EN: With "Groundcontrol and the Victory of Mankind" moonbooter releases the first album of a new series. In summer 2018 Bernd had already presented some of the songs of this project live: "Sometimes I have different outputs, which are hard to fit on a single concept album. That's why I got the idea for a new project name. I don't see "moonbooter" as a project, but as a synonym for myself and my musical work. In the future, "Groundcontrol" will appear whenever my music moves too far away from classical EM." Although Bernd´s musical handwriting on Groundcontrol is still dominant, a few things are different: Groundcontrol is faster, clearer but also more memorable. Like on "The Wave" or "Schwarzmond" the new album is a bit darker. Melancholy and euphoria are very close. Basically, as always, melodies and sequences dominate this album, which moonbooter-usually are carried by epic rhythms. But also driving beats and an always up-to-date, analog sound characterize this album. "I've been working almost exclusively with hardware for a few years now. This makes my music seem less static and just sounds better." Hardly any other musician of the German EM scene has had such a continuous, versatile and inspiring output over so many years as moonbooter. "I only make the music that I carry inside me." Also at his concerts he has been giving everything for many years and always knows how to surprise and inspire his audience. "Groundcontrol and the Victory of Mankind" is rhythmic EM of a new generation and wants to be. In terms of sound, the album doesn't need to hide behind the greatest of the scene. "Yes, my songs may be loud, but I don't go along with this crazy Loudness-madness". Sound lovers appreciate the high dynamics and the present and always clear moonbooter sound. So be ready for the new moonbooter sound. Good entertainment!

EN: First of all: "Both Sides of the Moon" is my first double album with over 120 minutes, 100% new music. So no remixes and no live recordings.
"Both Sides of the Moon" is a tribute to the 50th anniversary of the Apollo 11 moon landing on 21 July 1969. This event was the main theme for the album. I had expected the public to devote more resonance and attention to this special day. In my opinion this was not the case at least here in Germany. Thus I could dedicate myself completely to this concept in good conscience.
As the title of the album suggests, it's about the two musical souls in me that make up my music: Classical electronics and modern club music. Sometimes dark, sometimes melancholic, sometimes playful, sometimes serious. Kitsch is also allowed. But please with style.
On "Both Sides of the Moon" I had an absolutely free hand. So there was no musical concept to limit me musically, only one theme. That is also a concept. Nothing has to fit together under all circumstances. Just make the music that's in you.
At the end there were 30 finished songs in front of me and as always I had to decide which of them to put on the final album. Yes, they still exist, the 70 minute limit for a CD. After a few minutes it was clear: A single CD was not enough this time. There were only a handful of songs I wanted to do without. And since this music had been produced for this album, it should also appear on this album. So I decided for a double album. I didn't make any compromises in terms of sound, composition, mastering or arrangement. It is important for me to emphasize this. Because there are no obvious gap fillers for my ears.
This musical freedom has done me personally very good. It was also a necessary evil in a way. Summer 2019 was no good for me. I had to struggle with health problems. These have now been overcome. Nevertheless I could not make real music over 5 months, but only collect ideas. During this time I lacked the necessary concentration and strength to limit myself to just one theme. When I recovered in September, I began to collect all these ideas, I was surprised myself, what all had come together. The inspiration was more than enough and within 6 weeks I could finish producing all the songs on "Both Sides of the Moon". I really enjoyed this time and had a lot of fun in the studio. Many emotions about the summer accompanied me. After everything was produced I thought about a sequence. I varied between different combinations, a fast and a slow album. So a dark and bright side of the moon. In the end I decided to compile the songs intuitively and create a smooth transition where it works. As a listener you are of course free to compile your own tracklist.

The idea for the title "Both Sides oft he Moon" can only be heard in recent weeks. Normally a title is fixed in advance. This time it was different, and I remembered my album "Devided" (which was released 14 years ago). Back then it was the same. Looking back, I'm glad I never tried to be an imitation of anything. I've always done my musical thing, developing myself further and never losing sight of the right and left. Of course not the one to the front and sometimes also back.

From time to time I listen to my own music. That's a fantastic time travel through my own life. Actually looking like photos, only different. On the other hand, I also check every now and then whether I have used ideas again and if so, whether they are in a different context. Personally I didn't notice anything serious in this point, but fans will certainly judge my music differently ;o)
"Both Sides of the Moon" has become a very diversified album. The sound is more open and maybe a bit more dynamic. A bit wider. Less complicated. Less full. More space for every single sound. More breaks. Those were my goals, too. Most of the sounds are handmade. So no presets from libraries, but programmed with attention to detail. Only with the obvious natural instruments like pianos and choirs I used samples off the rack. Where we are at another point: Yes, the piano can be heard again and again on "Both Sides of the Moon". That was also planned that way. I love the piano and I think that my music has been a bit too short in the last years. This time I have renounced guitars of any kind.

To the production itself: Mainly hardware synthesizers were used. A list can be found below. I recorded almost all musical ideas directly. And because I had always recorded only short moments, it was no longer possible to arrange or transpose/supplement. I also find this experience as a musician refreshing and felt transported back to the late 80s when multi-track recorders were used. Many elements are the way I recorded them live, which makes the songs in parts more authentic and alive. Not everything is 100% perfect. So please forgive me for a few timing fluctuations. And I just don't feel that perfect as really perfect. This experience will also accompany my music more strongly in the future.
I wish you a lot of fun and a good time with my music.
You and yours
Bernd "moonbooter" Scholl
